Book description

Stuff I Read – Eden It’s an Endless World Vol 4Well with volume four we finally see the big battle between Propater and the protagonists wrap up, and learn a bit more about Kenji in the process. After the deaths and other events of the last volume, this one is a bit more focused on Kenji, while the other characters are along for the ride but really don’t get to do much. Part of this is that this is what has been happening with Kenji while the rest of the group was off getting killed and such, but part of it is also because here we get the background of Kenji, his journey from child to what he is now. What I can’t really figure out about all this is if Kenji is supposed to be a sort of distorted mirror to Elijah or if there is something else going on that the writer is trying to get across. In any event, this volume ups the all out action while giving a little bit of grounding of the world with the origins of both Kenji and the Aeons. The story kind of flits back in forth between the present and the time of Kenji’s initiation into violence. Though it seems as though he has been around violence his entire life, he has been partly shielded from actually doing violence by his older brother. Their relationship seems incredibly messed up, as the first real scene we have of them involves them killing their father in a very grotesque way. That aside, though, we start to see how this world operates, though by this point we already have a good idea. As with the rest of this world, violence and ugliness has crept into basically every aspect of Kenji’s life. Him and his brother obviously care about each other, and it seems as though his brother wants more for Kenji than the gang violence that the brother engages in. At the same time, the brother makes Kenji physically push his father down the stairs, so he is also the main reason for why Kenji gets involved in violence. It is a strange relationship. As the segments in the past start to come together, the reader is confronted with the origins of the Aeons, as Kenji’s brother and his gang, with the newly raised Kenji himself, are sent into a trap and pretty all die. The rest, including Kenji’s brother, die shortly after, and Kenji is left in the weird relationship with Khan, who steps into the space emptied by Kenji’s brother. But it is just rather weird. Kenji is a person who is extremely skilled at killing, and not much else. And yet he needs someone else to direct him, to give him a purpose, and basically to lie to him and tell him there is something to fight for. With his brother, Kenji believed the stories he heard about the sea, even though those stories turned out to be a lie. And when faced with the destruction of the lies, Kenji reacts violently. With Khan, the lie is replaced with hatred. Khan funnels Kenji’s hatred into a drive to kill everyone he is told to kill. The problem arises really because without someone calling the shots, Kenji seems incapable of living. The story in the present is much less provoking, and just involves Kenji fighting the top Propater fighter, and eventually having to depend on Elijah to save him. But otherwise, there isn’t much there aside from the traditional fighting. The two engage in a bit of thought on how humans are superior to technology or even Aeon’s but it is hard to believe that Kenji’s opponent is actually human, as he gets shot through the head and doesn’t die. Perhaps he is some sort of hybrid or advanced Aeon, or maybe the character is just exaggerated to make more of a point, that the real monsters are not the Aeons, who look the part, but the humans, who are ultimately responsible for the ugliness of the world. It can easily be said that the disease that struck and the cybernetic enhancements present on the people of the world were and are just the physical manifestation of the ugliness of humanity, that it is just the internal brought to the surface. All in all it is another good read, though I don’t find Kenji the most compelling sort of character. Perhaps if he is complicated in some way, or humanized in some way, but at the moment he is the glorification of the emotionless killer, and it makes me like him a bit less. He is the star of the show here, and while it provides good action with some disturbing imagery, there really isn’t the feel that he has grown as a character very much. He is a weapon, and until he starts thinking of himself as something other than that, he will be a bit one dimensional. But the group finally gets out of the situation and I look forward to see what kind of stuff happens to the group next. A solid installment, earning a 7/10.
